| | Born in Berlin, Germany on Dec. 31, 1904. Lesser was well known in his native land for his satirical and cartoon sketches. A Jew, with Hitler's rise to power, he escaped to San Francisco in 1940 where he remained. For many years he had a very successful gallery on Sutter Street where he exhibited his works as well as those of other local artists. Although he did a few portraits and landscapes in oil, his first love was pen-and-ink. His sketches of famous people often appeared in San Francisco newspapers before his death on March 17, 1985.
