Biography from Cotai Fine Art:
Please note: Artists not classified as American in our database may have limited biographical data compared to the extensive information about American artists.

Eugène-Antoine-Samuel Lavieille was born in Paris.  Attracted to nature, he moved for a time to Barbizon and then to La Ferté-Milon before settling in Montmartre.  Known for his landscapes, and for a skill similar to that of Daubigny for capturing the charm and mystery of the evening, Lavieille was regarded as the best of Corot’s students, along with Chintreuil. His pleasant disposition also afforded him a reputation for a sincere interest in and love of the art he created.  Lavieille’s first entry into the Salon was in 1844.  That he was awarded medals at the Salons of 1849, 1864 and 1870 attests to his devotion and the consistency of his production.  The grand Chevalier de la Legion d’honneur was bestowed on the artist in 1878.

Museums owning his work: Alençon; Brest; Grenoble; Guéret; Le Mans; Marseille; Montpellier; Moulins; Nantes; Narbonne; Paris, le Louvre; Rouen; New York, Metropolitan Museum of Art
