This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Born near Wells, VT on July 22, 1838 into a large family of musicians. Lewis and his wife made the overland trek to San Jose, CA in 1868 and, three years later, moved to San Francisco where their daughter Mary Amanda was born. In 1887 the Lewis family settled on a farm near Sacramento where they raised bees. As well as a fine painter, Lewis was also an accomplished musician and served as Sacramento's first cellist. He died there on July 23, 1910. Exh: Calif. State Fair, 1872-92 (awards); Hotel Sacramento, 1911 (with his daughter). In: Crocker Museum.
