This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Born in Greenlaw, Scotland, George Linen came to America in 1834 and established a painting career in New York and New Jersey, but he also traveled including to Baltimore, Richmond, and Terra Haute.

He studied at the Royal Scottish Academy in Edinburgh. In the United States, he exhibited at the Pennsylvania Academy and the National Academy of Design.

His place of death has been listed both as New York City and a farm near Bloomdale, New Jersey.

George Linnen was christened 29 APR 1802, in Greenlaw, Berwickshire, Scotland. He was the son of John Linnen and Isabel Dickson. He was one of 9 children. One brother John Linnen was also an artist. Both John and George settled in NY.
