The following information was submitted in October of 2006 by Simon Copas: Jessie Loose Smith studied under Robert Henri and William Merrit Chase at the New York School of art in 1904/5 and later at the Ecole Des Beaux Arts in 1922. She produced some good portraits in a painterly style under Henri, as well as many good charcoal sketches. Her Paris works are a few and are more stylized and without the verve of her early works.
She was born in 1886 in Kansas and went to school at the Taconic School, Lakeville Connecticut, and later at Miss Walcott's School, Denver Colorado.
She married Ralph Percival Smith, a metalurgical engineer, in 1924 and resided in Britain unil 1942 before returning to New York, California and then Nova Scotia where she died in 1979.
