| John M. Letts was born in New York in 1818. Accompanied by artist George V. Cooper, Letts left New York in 1849 for California.
He traveled about the Gold Rush country during 1849-53 making sketches of Placerville and Sacramento. These sketches were used in the book, “A Pictorial View of California” (published New York 1853).
After returning to New York City, he became a successful lawyer and banker.
