A 19th century dealer in Holland was sued because he sold a canvas as "one of the finest" Frans Hals ever painted when Frans Hals never touched it. So who was the mystery painter behind it? It was actually Judith Leyster, the only woman among about thirty master painters in the 1630s. The signature on the painting was not "F H" as was thought, but "J L" with a little star, the star representing the last syllable of her name.
