| Born in San Bernardino, California, Mabel Lawrence did numerous commissioned portraits of children and animals.
She moved to Prescott, Arizona in 1900 when her father was transferred by the Santa Fe Railroad. She took her formal art training from the California School of Arts and Crafts in Berkeley, and then returned to Prescott.
In 1921, she married Charles Lawrence and combined her art career with homemaking, but studied oil painting with Claire Dooner Phillips and portrait painting with Jo Rogozon at the Arizona School of Art in Phoenix. She was a founding member of the Mountain Artists' Guild.
