MARILYN LOBER COLUCCI Artist’s Statement “I paint with a passion as a conductor conducts an orchestra. The colors I choose are like music notes coming together to create a symphony. I must paint with passion for if there is no passion there will be no painting”
Marilyn Lober Colucci’s love for art began in high school but never truly evolved until she moved to Provincetown in late 2001.
Marilyn’s voice was her first form of art. A talented singer with a strong and passionate touch, she sings from her soul evoking the pain and sorrows of life. Little did she know sharing a room in that soul was an untouched jewel. Her love for drawing led her to create a portfolio of high fashion illustrations and figures.
In Provincetown, this love was exposed when she experienced the dramatic colors and light, which attracted the earlier artists. Her primary influence was John Clayton, a local listed artist who introduced her to plein air painting and the traditional Cape Cod School of Art. Marilyn pursued her art with various teachers and always returned to the rebellious style of abstract expressionism, an approach that steered her away from the traditional and realistic approach. It was not until she studied with established artist Cynthia Packard that she found her true voice. Marilyn’s haunting passion of painting the female figure is experienced by her audience, the feeling is sensual and emotional. She is fully immersed in her work. Her balance of color and tonalities in the feminine shape evoke a soulful composition. She prefers using the palette knifes more than the brush incorporating charcoal drawings of her figures, portraits, still life, and felines in her oil paintings. Like her earlier experience with music she creates a painting using colorful and dark notes depending on her emotions.
Marilyn was born 1957 in Forest Hills, New York and now resides in Provincetown after her experience of September 11th, leaving the Broadway lights working for Actors’ Equity Association for 12 years to fulfill her dreams. Frida Kahlo is Marilyn’s first early artistic influence and her Provincetown early artistic influence is Lucy and William L’Engle.
