Biography from Jones & Terwilliger Galleries:
Please note: Artists not classified as American in our database may have limited biographical data compared to the extensive information about American artists.

Nydia Lozano was born in 1947 in Alginet, Spain, a small town of the Ribera of Valencia. Nydia grew up in the huerta landscape, in which life translates itself in a strong luminous atmosphere and in the bright colors of the rice fields of orange and lemon tress.  Everything that her sensitiveness kept accumulating in youth manifested itself in her affection for painting.  Nydia Lozano's first works were landscapes depicting Alginet.  She also painted portraits of her family and friends.

When her father noticed the intensity of her affection for painting he approached Mr. Jose Espert, a master painter in Alginet, for his opinion of his daughter's talent.  Espert was impressed with the drawings and invited Nydia into his studio to study with him.  She later attended the San Carlos Fine Arts School in Valencia where she met her future husband, artist Leopoldo Sanchez.

Inspired by the work of the 19th century masters, Sargent, Sorolla and Zorn and the continuing philosophy of the Valencia School, Nydia's paintings started to portray the female figure.  Her first exhibition was in 1969 in a group show with Vicente Silvestre.  Around this same time she won several awards such as the Ciudad de Jativa in 1965, the Caja de Ahorros del Sureste Plastic Arts Biennal Medal in 1968 and, the Education and Science Ministry Silver Medal which granted her a stipend in order to paint in Segovia.  In 1970 she was awarded a grant in Rome by the Castellblanch Foundation.

After finishing her studies in 1971, she married, leaving Valencia for Barcelona in 1974.  She began an exhibiting career all over Spain with her husband.  Her paintings are inspired by her travels in Spain, depicting the life and landscape primarily of the Andalusian province of Cadiz.  Her canvases reflect the strength of her talent and the sensitivity of her heart.
