This biography from the Archives of AskART:
A portrait, miniature and landscape painter, teacher, muralist and sculptor, Penelope Lingen was born in North Carolina and studied at Queens College in Charlotte. She moved to Texas in 1882 and took art lessons in Galveston from Maria Cage Kimball. She also attended Sophie Newcomb College In New Orleans, studying with Ellsworth Woodward and William Woodward. Then she went to the Art Institute of Chicago as a student of Albert Krehbiel and Lorado Taft.

Lingan then returned to Houston, where she earned a reputation for the quality of her portrait painting and sculpture.

She died in 1943 in Houston at the home of her son.

A mural by Penelope Lingan was installed in the Milan Hotel in Houston, and her paintings are in the collections of the North Carolina State Capitol in Raleigh; Yale University and the Art Leagues of Austin and Houston.
