Born on February 1, 1921, in Pine Bluff, Arkansas, he is the son of Edward and Gussie Lagrone. After graduating from high school, he attended Tuskegee Institute until drafted in the Air Force in 1942. Lagrone served in North Africa and Italy, and studied art at the University of Florence, Italy. After the War he studied at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York, graduating in 1949.
