This biography from the Archives of AskART:
2002 Winner of the National Gallery Award of Excellence by the Oil Painters of America, Ruo Li was born in China and emigrated to the United States in 1989, settling in California.  He received his art training at the Arts and Crafts School in Hunan Province, and his Bachelor's Degree in 1981 from the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Art.  There for eight years, he served as Director of Teaching and Research in the Oil Painting Department.

In America, he settled in California as a fine-art painter, and in 1996 was voted into the California Art Club, the same year that he won the Club's Gold Medal for his seascape painting.  He has also been recognized for his plein-air painting at an exhibition in 2000 at the Artist Guild Show of the San Diego Museum.

Of his seascape painting, he said:

" Most people love the sea and admire its unique beauty. In my eyes the sea is ever changing. Each time when I create a new seascape painting, I find an undiscovered face of the sea and my feelings are totally different. Each time it feels like I an kissing the sea for the first time. At this moment both the sea and I are melted into the air. Existing in this world are only the ever-changing lines, the colors, the styles, the melody, the rhythm..."
