This biography from the Archives of AskART:
An 18th-Century artist who painted the port of Charleston described as "one of the most remarkable early landscapes produced in the South", Thomas Leitch lived primarily in New York City.  He visited Charleston in 1774.  After completing the painting, View of Charles-Town, he advertised engravings from it and described the copies of his 'Portrait of the Town' as being so exact that "every House in View will be distinctly shown."

Leitch's Charleston painting had symbolism in that the sailing ship was English and symbolized the trade during the Revolution between England and the south's most prosperous town at that time.  Three diminished African-American figures are standing along the shore and are symbolic of the agricultural workers responsible for the prosperity of the area.

Maurie D. McInnis, "Transatlantic Currents: Paintings at Mesda", The Magazine Antiques, January, 2007
