Walter Layman was born on 22 May 1871 in Covington, Kentucky and raised in Cincinnati, Ohio, a son of John W. and Hannah Layman. He was a painter, illustrator, designer, and photographer. He studied at the Cincinnati Art Academy, Art Student League of New York, and the American Art Association in Paris.
