Wang Luyan (b. 1956)

A conceptual artist, Wang has been at the forefront of China's avant-garde art movement in the late 1970s and 1980s, subsequently founding the Tactile Sensation Group, Analyst Group and New Measurement Group.  The New Measurement Group explored the possibilities of communicating experiences and perceptions through quantities and measurements as opposed to erratic individuality.  When the group eventually disbanded in 1995, its members destroyed all the documents and materials relating to the their practice in a fire, preferring to maintain its legacy conceptually.  In the mid-1990s, Wang gave up exhibiting his works publicly as he felt that market forces dictated formulaic reiterations of China's revolutionary past and political history.

In the summer of 2013, Wang re-emerged with a solo exhibition at Beijing's new Parkview Green Exhibition Hall which would reestablish him as what curator Wu Hong called "one of the most important Chinese conceptual artists working today."

In many of his works, Wang grafts Western cultural references onto a Chinese context, thus also telling a narrative about a society that is trying to fanatically catch up to industrial production.
