Following is the obituary of the artist from the San Francisco Chronicle, April 15, 2012.  Submitted by Katherine Wong.

Accomplished Chinese Artist, John Way (Wei Letang), passed away on April 4, 2012 at the age of 91. John Way was born in Shanghai, China. As a child he trained with the masters in ancient calligraphy.

In 1956 Way emigrated to United States and embraced the exciting work of America's East Coast modern art movement. For the past sixty years, Way has attempted to bring these two seemingly diverse art forms in harmony through his paintings.

Chinese-American, 1921-2012

Born in Shanghai, John Way has held his own shows in Shanghai since 1937. From 1951 his works have been selected to show at the Hong Kong Art Club Annual Exhibition for five consecutive years.

Way settled down in Boston in 1956, where he studied abstract painting in the West. Throughout the 1960s Way had held many solo shows in Boston, including one in Nexus Gallery in 1960 and one in MIT's Art Museum in 1968.

In 1965, his work was showed alongside with other well-acclaimed contemporary artists including Hans Hartung and Andy Warhol, in a joint exhibition "Painting Without a Brush" held at the Accademia del Verbano in Italy.

His works are in the collections of both the Stanford University Art Museum and the San Francisco Art Museum.
