| An author and illustrator of children's books, Munro Leaf was best
known for his 1936 book, The Story of Ferdinand, a peace loving Spanish bull
who wanted to smell flowers instead of fight. Eight editions sold out within thirteen months, but in Germany, the
book was banned as it was perceived as being anti-war.
Munro was born in Hamilton, Maryland. He graduated in 1927 from
the University of Maryland and then earned a Master's Degree in
Literature from Harvard University.
