| The Natural Bridge of Virginia was thought to be the most astonishing place in nature in the ante-bellum South, a site so special as to evoke the eighteenth century sense of the sublime. No less than Thomas Jefferson, who once owned this bridge washed from rock by coursing waters, felt that, "It is impossible for the emotions, arising from the sublime to be felt beyond what they are here: so beautiful an arch, so elevated, so light, springing as it were up to heaven!
