Please note: Artists not classified as American in our database may have limited biographical data compared to the extensive information about American artists.

Aldo Mondino was born in Turin, Italy, in 1938.  In 1959 he moved to Paris where he attended William Heyter’s Atelier 17 for two years.  He also studied mosaics with Severini, and met young surrealistic painters, an experience which would leave its mark in his works from the 1960s.

?In 1960 he went back to Italy and started exhibiting at Gian Enzo Sperone’s gallery. His works from that period are straightforward quotations of painters from Casorati to Dine, with references to pop culture, traffic signs, and the world of childhood. In 1969, he introduced writings and single words into his works, and started experimenting with unusual materials such as sugar and chocolate.

?In 1976, he took part in the 38th Venice Biennial with a work centered on a philological parallel between his art and Schönberg’s compositions.

?From the 1990s onward, his interest focused on oriental themes and three-dimensional works. He created sculptures in sweets and chocolate and went on a long trip to Morocco, Palestine and Turkey. In 1993, for the Venice Biennial, he exhibited a series of large paintings representing whirling dervishes.  The Orient and Spain, were the central elements of his work throughout those years.

?In 2000 he made his first trip to India, and in 2001 a first retrospective of his works took place in Florence.

?He died in 2005.

?The most recent exhibitions of his works include: “Dining Out” (2007), Unimediamodern Contemporary Art – Palazzo Squarciafico, Genoa; “Oltre l’oggetto” (2007), MUMI-Museo Michetti, Francavilla al Mare, Switzerland; “Chiari&Geniali” (2007), Villa Mazzotti, Chiari, Italy; “Maniera astratta” (2006), Galleria Arteincornice, Turin; “Food” (2006), Studio Guastalla, Milan; “...and the stars shine” (2006), Bel Art Gallery, Milan.
