| | Born in Stockton, CA on Jan. 24, 1875, the daughter of Swiss immigrants who had settled in Stockton in the 1850s. Anita began taking art lessons from local artist Oxley Miller in 1895 and married him two years later. She often accompanied her husband on sketching trips into the remote areas of northern California and, under his guidance, became a competent painter. Working in oil and watercolor, she painted floral studies, still lifes, landscapes and, in the last two years of her life, religious subjects.
