This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Ann Sonia Medalie was born in Latvia on April 17, 1896.  Medalie emigrated from Lithuania to Chicago in 1921.  She studied briefly at the Art Institute of Chicago and worked in Chicago as a furniture decorator until 1928.

She continued this line of work in Los Angeles until 1932 when she moved to San Francisco.  Under the auspices of the WPA, she was an assistant to Hilaire Hiler on the murals in the Maritime Museum.  She also assisted muralists Diego Rivera and Miguel Covarrubias in painting murals and maps for the GGIE.

During 1942-48 she lived and painted in Mexico while making trips back to San Francisco.  In 1951 she moved to Israel into  an old stone house in Safed where she established a studio.  A spinster, she died in Tel Aviv on April 30, 1991.  Her forte was flower paintings.
