BIOGRAPHY Born and raised in the San Fernando Valley, a suburb of Los Angeles, Bruce Marion was recognized as having a passion and talent for art at very young age. His dad, who had studied art at the Chouinard Art Institute and the Art Center College of Design, encouraged, taught, and supported the young artist. At the age of eight, Marion was accepted into the adult oil painting class of Los Angeles figurative painter Gloria Ralph. They worked on still life and figurative painting from models.
At the age of 9, unbeknownst to him, Marions mother entered his drawing of a Rabbi into a public art show in Los Angeles. It was accepted and was subsequently purchased by an enthusiastic buyer. The buyer called the Marion household to thank the artist and asked to speak to Mr. Marion. He was stunned to find out the artist was not the elder Marion, but his young son.
At the age of 13, Marion studied with artist Preston Hubbard. Hubbard created whimsical costumes of mixed media and hand crafted and painted furniture. For the next several years, Marion began making his own furniture creations and selling them at a popular outdoor art show in Los Angeles. Between 1972 and 1974, Marion apprenticed for the artist George Crionas. Marions job was to hand tint Crionas etchings and lithographs. Marion learned some different etching techniques from Crionas and was able to experiment using Crionas tools and etching press.
After high school, Marion was accepted into the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena where he studied with such notable artists as Lorser Feitelson and Harry Carmien, and prominent illustrators Barron Storey and Pat Nagel. He enjoyed figurative painting and was greatly influenced by the works of David Hockney, Matisse, Picasso, Richard Lidner and the German Expressionists. He excelled in school and went on to graduate with honors in 1978.
For the next several years, Marion painted and did freelance illustration work in Los Angeles. His work was of very stylized and angular figures in humorous and sexually charged situations. He taught drawing at the Otis Parsons Institute of Art, had a one-man show in Beverly Hills, and was doing illustration work for magazines and record companies.
In 1982 Marion was offered a job as a corporate art director. Excited by the opportunity to learn and oversee design and production of a new quarterly magazine, as well as all aspects of collateral and advertising material for the company, Marion accepted the position and relocated to the companys corporate headquarters in Redwood City, California. Through this time, Marion continued to work on his own paintings.
In 1989, Marion left his corporate job to start his own design and illustration firm. He produced work for dozens of companies in many different industries. He illustrated book covers and magazine articles, designed logos for new products and illustrated many different board games and puzzles.
In 2000, Marion moved to Scottsdale, Arizona for the warmer climate and the beautiful desert scenery. He is currently working on highly painterly and textured figures in joyful surroundings and more realistic paintings done from live models that capture the character and uniqueness of each person.
