This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Born in Kansas, Caroline Bowles was a painter of landscapes and also decorative work in art nouveau style.  Her subjects included the Grand Canyon and Yosemite National Park, and she had studios in Massachusetts, France, California, Nevada and Arizona.

She studied with William Merritt Chase at the Art Students League and then in Paris at the Academie Julian.  In 1916, she went to Pasadena from Boston and lived for four years in Altadena where she shared a studio with Ellen Kellogg.

A plein-air painter in modernist style, she was a member of the California Art Club and the Modern Art Society of Los Angeles, which she helped organize in 1916 and which was the city's first group dedicated to modernist trends in art.

She exhibited paintings at the San Francisco Art Association and batiks and watercolors at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.

Caroline Bowles returned to Massachusetts, living in Winchester until her death on November 12, 1923.   Her husband was artist Herman Dudley Murphy.
