| | Born in France in 1821. Meryon was commissioned by F. L. Pioche, a San Francisco banker, in 1856 to create an engraving of San Francisco from five panoramic photographs. His large depiction of the city included allegorical figures in the foreground, and medallions of Pioche and Jules Bayerque, another local sponsor, as well as a realistic depiction of the city.
