Charles McGee (born December 15, 1924 in Clemson, South Carolina) is an American artist. McGee moved to Detroit at the age of 10, where he found that “everything was on the move and it hasn’t slowed down yet.”

McGee’s paintings, assemblages and sculptures are in prestigious national and international collections, and are on permanent display at the Detroit Institute of Arts and the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History.

His work is installed in public settings, foremost in the William Beaumont Hospital of Royal Oak, Michigan and the Broadway People Mover station.

Over the past six decades, Charles McGee, 87, has had a distinguished career that includes hundreds of exhibitions in the United States and abroad as well as many important contributions to Detroit’s cultural and educational community.

His paintings, assemblages and sculptures are in prestigious national and international collections and permanently installed at various institutions worldwide.

A vital contributor to the artistic community of Detroit, McGee is a mentor, teacher, and community arts advocate. He is credited for founding the Charles McGee School of Art, Gallery 7, and the Contemporary Art Institute of Detroit (CAID).

Charles McGee taught for eighteen years at Eastern Michigan University and currently continues to contribute works to gallery exhibitions.
