Navajo potter Christine McHorse was born in either 1948 or 1949 to the Bitter Water Clan, born for the Towering House Clan. She grew up in Morenci, Arizona, in the southeastern part of the state. She learned to make pottery from her husband's grandmother, Lena Archuleta of the Taos Pueblo. As a young girl, she studied art with sculptor Allan Houser and painter Fritz Scholder at the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe in 1963, when it was still a high school. She was artist-in-r (showing 500 of 1653 characters). |
