Conan Eugene Mathews was born in Providence, UT on Sept. 16, 1905. Mathews studied at Utah State Agricultural College and on a scholarship at the CSFA in 1930-33; he was a teacher at the latter for two years. He was also a pupil of Hans Hofmann at UC Berkeley. He painted murals for the Idaho exhibit on Treasure Island at the GGIE. By 1941 he was head of the art department at Boise (Idaho) Jr. College and was active there until 1957. He died in Utah in October 1972.
