This biography from the Archives of AskART:
| One of the few early 20th Century comic strip illustrators, Dale Messick became known for her long-running "Brenda Starr, Reporter" series. The strip ran in 250 newspapers at its peak in the 1950s, and remains ongoing although Messick retired from it in 1985.
Messick replaced her real name of Dalia for Dale to disguise the fact she was a female. Of her character, red-headedBrenda, Dale Messick said she had "everything I didn't have."
However, Messick has been described as having "spunk and style worthy of her redheaded creation."
