The following is from the artist:

David Patrick Maurer, Artist, composer, author
Born: 6/12/63 in Port Huron, Michigan
Currently residing in Savage, Minnesota

Education: Michigan public schools and college, as well as my parents, both of whom are talented artists. I am a trained jazz and classical guitarist.

My work is best known for horror or fantasy elements, such as my series of mermaids. I prefer to work in monochrome - color works tend to be bold and bright. I often begin with a photograph or a collage of photographs. Although I have worked in charcoal, pencil, ink and oil, my current work is entirely digital, and I embrace the computer as a means of perfectly executing what is in my mind's eye, as well as a means of experimentation. Its speed and precision allow me at least a fighting chance in keeping up with the flow of new ideas and material with which I wake up each day.

For anyone interested, I own virtually every computer graphics program currently available, but spend most of my time in Jasc Software's Paint Shop Pro. I use a Wacom Intuos 6 x 9 drawing tablet. I am a life-long fan of film and have begun to dabble in animation and film-making, as well.

My strongest artistic influences have been Salvador Dali, Max Ernst, Clive Barker and Suze Randall, as well as several Art Nouveau artists whose names I never learned. Musically, I enjoy Laurie Anderson, Talking Heads, film sound tracks and the Police while working. On the literature side, William Burroughs, Terry Pratchett, Kurt Vonnegut, Jonathon Irving, Clive Barker.

I suffer (and suffer) from Attention Deficit Disorder. One of the prime movers of my life. On the plus side, it keeps the work moving along and fresh. On the down side, I have to completely finish a piece immediately as it occurs to me, or become profoundly bored with it. This applies to art, music or stories. There is also a constant competition between each of these categories. The computer once again saves the day - I generally have two stories, three-five paintings, and one or two pieces of music open on my desk top at any given time, and flit back and forth between them from moment to moment.

I have been a guitar teacher, salesman, busboy, cook, purchasing agent and a sales manager, so far, to make ends meet. I am attempting to pursue my art as a means of making a living for the first time. I've always been curious as to whether or not it would fly with anyone but myself. I've been doing this since I was ten or so, but always as a means of letting out my demons, rather than for approval from anyone else.
