This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Almost every art lover becomes  fascinated by an exhibition featuring Illusionist paintings.  In art  terms,  Illusionist  refers to  a type chimera that has been rendered using a convincing  play  of shadows reflections and textures.  If properly executed,  the artist  can lead the viewer to  believe that he has had an encounter with the  actual objects  that are portrayed within the picture plane.  Donald Mc Dorman is a painter who is capable of rendering such convincing  illusions.

Some fine examples of his oeuvre were shown at the Grand central Galleries in New York.  His detailed paintings are commonly rendered on a smooth surface in a manner reminiscent  of some of Americas best masters of optical illusion.  Mc Dorman works in the style of some of  the country’s best Magic Realists.  His work is inspired  by artists such as  John F. Peto, William Harnett, and John Haberle.  He along with these painters from  the last century have excelled in the production of works that are fashioned to be viewed at close range.  Because the artist  makes reference to these  past American Masters of still life art,  it is not surprising that his own works are imbued with a certain beauty that is coupled  with a deep  sense of mystery.  His best work is composed by using carefully  arranged  objects, rendered in minute detail.  His pictures incorporate the best design elements along with the inclusion of select tactile objects. When these elements are combined they serve  to create the most convincing optical illusions.

This somewhat obscure creator routinely incorporates a melange of unique objects that are arranged to fit into specific space arrangements.  He achieves the most success when he chooses  to employ a variety of  elements within the picture that appear to be highly tactile in nature .  Some of the artists  best works serve to act as a portal of Surrealism.  Mc Dorman is an unquestionably accomplished artist who abides by the best traditions of Tromp l’oeil.
