Born in Nogales, Arizona, Elina Mix went east where she studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts on a fellowship and was a student of Joseph Pearson, Charles Grafly, and Daniel Garber.
In Nogales, she was married to Hungarian immigrant Alexander Leroy Podwinetz Johnson, who had become a Captain in the United States Cavalry and was assigned to be part of the troops protecting the US border from Mexico.
