Born in Franklin, Massachusetts, Eliab Metcalf was a painter of portraits, both life size and miniature, still lifes, and also was a cutter of silhouettes. He was born in Franklin, Massachusetts and visited Guadeloupe in 1807-1808 and Halifax in 1810. He then studied in New York City with John Rubens Smith, Samuel Lovett Waldo, and William Jewett, and settled a studio there for several years. From 1819 to 1823, he exhibited at the American Academy.
