Biography from a third party submitted on 01/15/2006:
Ellen Conover McCluskey is well known on Martha’s Vineyard for her creative endeavors, from her early days in Edgartown helping to establish various shops and a prominent Edgartown Inn and art gallery, to teaching music after having attended the Longy School in Cambridge, to joining the Granary Gallery in 1981 as artists’ coordinator and then beginning to show her own work of Vineyard pastels.  “In living on the Island for more than 25 years and working with so many wonderfully artistic people, seeing the Vineyard through their eyes encouraged me to develop my own interpretation.  I try to capture the rare beauty of those “special Vineyard places,” many familiar to all and some only to a few.  Using pastel as a medium is perfect for me because the various techniques that can be employed are well suited for painting the multitudinous moods of the Island, from an Edgartown street scene to a serene up-Island farm.  There is so much charm and texture here.  I feel fortunate as an artist to live where the inspiration is endless and hope that my work reflects my love for the Island.”

Ellen’s pastels are in the collections of many Vineyarders, and are also in collections throughout this country and in Canada.
