Eunice Loncoske McCloskey (1904-1983)

Eunice Loncoske McCloskey was born in Ridgway on May 25, 1904, the daughter of Frederick William Loncoske and Ada Nelson Loncoske.  A graduate of the Centennial High School, she studied poetry and English for one year at Columbia University.

Mrs. McCloskey has written over seventeen books, and has painted at least 4,000 paintings, of which at least 800 hang in sixteen states.  Her work was hung in many of the museums in the United States as well as in Paris, France.  Truly a self-made woman, she has never had an art lesson.

Her life is written up in various Who's Who, among them, Who's Who in American Art, Who's Who in the East, Who's Who in American Women, and various foreign Who's Who's.

She was honored by being invited to The White House five times, accepting invitations three times.  Membership is held by Mrs. McCloskey in the Professional Hall of Fame and as a Fellow of the International Institute of Arts and Letters.

Her busy life has also included church and community activities since the age of fourteen. She taught Sunday School for thirty-four years; started the first Parent-Teachers Association; revived the Ridgway Borough Shade Tree Commission; and assisted the Village Improvement Association in starting the Clothesline Art Exhibit.  She has continued to be active in the Clothesline Art Exhibit since that time.  She was elected Ridgway's "Woman of the Year" in 1957.

She was married to the late Lewis McCloskey, and they became the parents of one daughter, Mimi.
