| Almeigh Woodleigh was born in England in 1835. Having studied in Europe, Woodleigh arrived in San Francisco about 1879. He stayed for only two years due to the depressed art market and lack of sales. When he had to lower his prices, he signed his works "Fearnleigh Leonard Montague." During his short stay he painted landscapes of Napa, Yosemite, Lake Tahoe, Moss Landing, and Santa Cruz. His travels then took him to the Columbia River in Oregon and to Australia.
