This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Born in Portland, Maine, he became a noted crafts person and painter in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and a friend there of the city's most prominent artist, Mathias Alten.

Mann studied at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn and then moving to Grand Rapids, founded the Crafts Society and the Forest Craft Guild, which he served as Director. In 1917, he moved the Guild to New York City.
