Biography from Crocker Art Museum Store:
Francis Samuel Marryat was born in London, England on April 18, 1826. "Frank" Marryat was educated in Paris and at Wimbledon. He entered the Royal Navy in 1840 as a midshipman and served sea duty until 1848. Coming into an inheritance in that year, he resigned from the navy to prepare for a hunting trip to California. He arrived in June of 1850 and did several watercolor drawings of Mission Dolores and scenes of San Francisco. He was active in San Francisco, Stockton, Sacramento, Vallejo, and the Mother Lode country until 1853 when yellow fever forced his return to England. He then wrote and illustrated his California experiences in the book, Mountains and Molehills. His work is of historical importance since some of his watercolors are the earliest scenes of the subjects portrayed. He died of a ruptured blood vessel in London on July 12, 1855.

Works held in Public Places: Society of Calif. Pioneers; Oakland Museum; Amon Carter Museum.
