| He was an innovative educator and visual artist.
From 1951-1977, as founding director of the Haystack Mountain School of Crafts in Deer Isle, Maine, he created an international community of craftmakers. His works were exhibited at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Museum of Modern Art and The Corcoran Gallery. Among his many honors he was a fellow of the American Craft Council and The Royal Society of Art.
Francis Sumner Merritt died on December 27, 2000 at age of 87.
