| George Henry Melcher was born in Germantown, PA on Nov. 16, 1881, the son of a sculptor. Meicher began drawing at an early age and at 12 began studying painting under a private teacher. At 15 he was selling cartoons to the New York Journal and New York World. After graduation from Germantown High School, he studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts under Chase, Anshutz, and Breckenridge, and at the Rose Valley School near Philadelphia.
