| Marine and landscape painter, George McConnell was born in 1852 in Steubenville, Ohio. He died in Portland, Maine in 1929. After he studied in New York City, Philadelphia and Paris, McConnell returned to Maine and opened a studio in 1883 in Portland, where he became a successful and popular landscape and marine artist. He was somewhat a recluse and was a member of the Society of Independent Artists. He was a realist who painted directly from nature.
