| George Theodore Franz Meyer was born in Stettin, Germany on Sept. 4, 1889, the son of a building contractor. Meyer was artistically inclined at an early age but his father opposed an art career causing him to join the merchant marines. He boarded a windjammer in 1909 and sailed around the Horn to Australia and then went to the Fiji Islands under contract to the British Government to build bridges. At the outbreak of WWI he was forced to leave Australia due to anti-German feelin (showing 500 of 1946 characters). |
