Giuseppe Mazzolini (b. 1806 Camerino - d. 1876 Rome)
Giuseppe Mazzolini was born in Camerino in the Italian province of Macerata on November 10, 1806.  A professional artist, Mazzolini was renowned for his outstanding copies of Old Master paintings and for his sensitive portraiture. Giuseppe Mazzolini died in Rome on February 2, 1876.
Little is known about the life of the artist.  There is an early reference to the work of Giuseppe Mazzolini in the Diario di Roma of 1828 (vol. 53).  Mazzolini is also referenced in A. M. Comanducci, Illustrated Dictionary of Artists, Designers and Engravers - Italian Modern and Contemporary.  A self-portrait of the artist, along with a portrait of the artist's wife dated 1846, hang in the Palazzo Bounaccorsi in Macerata.
Below are some citations of the artist's work:
A document dated 1879 references a copy of Raphael's Transfiguration painted by Giuseppe Mazzolini.  The painting was commissioned by a wealthy patron and was subsequently donated to the Mount Holyoke Seminary in Massachusetts: "This copy, made in 1846 for a noble family in Rome by Giuseppe Mazzolini, is considered excellent …."

A 1915 archive references two painting by Mazzolini in the U.S. National Museum: "From Dr. Nathan Boyd, of Washington, copy of Titian's portrait of his daughter, and Portrait of Beatrice Cenci, by G. Mazzolini."  Source: Annual Report of the U. S. National Museum - 1915 (now known as the Smithsonian).  Rider's "Washington: A Guide Book for Travelers" (1924) mentions Mazzolini's paintings in the National Museum.

"Like many of their contemporaries, the Skerretts' preferred the classical and late Renaissance art of Italy….  In Rome, Anna and Fanny's portraits were painted by Giuseppe Mazzolini after the style of Titian…." Source: County House of the Armat Family - The Years 1801-1835 - by Mark Bower.

Other references for Mazzolini include: The Nineteenth Century Paintings of the Walters Art Gallery (Baltimore, MD) by William R. Johnston (1982); A Checklist of Painters c. 1200-1994 - published by the Witt Library (1995); Copie di pitture (Scuola italiana). Mazzolini, Piazza Monte Citorio, Palazzo Capranica, 121. Source:
Published examples of paintings by the artist include: Widowed Family, Peaceful Slumber, Mother and Children Fleeing (Approaching Storm), Fanciulla Con Rose, Seguimi, Mother and Child at a Window, St. John the Baptist, The Nativity of Christ (copy of original by Pompeo Girolamo Batoni).  Inscription on back of canvas reads: "Giu...Mazzolini / painted ../ Rome 18…."
