This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Born February 1, 1937

Education: California State University, Fresno, and the Art Center School of Design, BA, Pasadena.

Harold Mason was both a gallery painter and instructor. He participated in the San Francisco Bay Area during the late 1960's and early 1970's. He was a signature member of the Society of Western Artist and the West Coast Watercolor Society. He won many awards in the area including the prestigious Grumbacher Award for Best Watercolor in the 29th annual SWA exhibit held in the De Young Museum, San Francisco.

He moved to Carmel, CA, during the 1970's where he became a member of the Carmel Art Association and served on the executive board of directors. During this period (1973-1989) he was listed in Who's Who in American Art, Who's Who in the West, Dictionary of International Biographies, and Men of Achievement.

With various galleries, he had annual one-man shows in Carmel, San Francisco, Seattle and Phoenix, and was included in many group shows throughout the United States and England including the Royal Watercolor Society, London. He was also included in the Masters of American Watercolor Exhibit held in the Hatfield Galleries in the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles.

His subject matter included rural scene of the west coast, a large series of paintings of the California missions, and during the early 1980's he became interested in archaeological subjects and their abstract nature of the pueblo people of the southwest. He had many one-man shows in the Southwest of these works which were purchased by both private and corporate collectors.

In 1989, after 25 years of painting, exhibiting, and selling more than 1,500 paintings, Mr. Mason retired from gallery exhibiting. During his career his works were purchased by more than a dozen corporate collectors such as banks, insurance companies and law firms, as well as private collectors throughout the United States and several foreign countries.

He moved to Albuquerque in 1989 and became the Coordinator of Computer Graphics for the Media Technology Services at the University of New Mexico. His teaching experience prior to this position had been with a parochial high school in northern California, Santa Rosa Junior College, CA, and the Sunset Cultural Center in Carmel, CA. In 1995, Mr. Mason retired from his career and started assembling and making books with the aid of his computer for his own pleasure.
