| | Henry A. McCraney was born in Iowa on March 13, 1848. Formerly a judge in the frontier days of Iowa, McCraney was a friend of William Jennings Bryant and was once offered a position in Woodrow Wilson's cabinet. After settling in San Francisco in 1886, he worked as a newspaper editor and an artist. During the Depression of the 1930s he maintained a studio in the “Monkey Block” (now the Transamerica Pyramid) where he was found nearly dead from starvation and too proud to ask for help. He died there on Oct. 31, 1934. | Source:
