| | Born in Southend, England in 1859. Marsh began painting at age ten and remained a self-taught artist. He came to San Francisco in 1913 as a shipbuilding consultant and held that position during WWI at an Oakland shipyard. He began painting in watercolor, but switched to oil about 1920. His works have been described as primitive art at its finest, infinitely detailed, with subdued but rich colors. The Alameda Art Ass'n, of which he was a charter member, held a retrospective of his works in 1954. Marsh lived on a houseboat on the Alameda Estuary and died there on May 15, 1963.
