This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Henry Muhrman, born in 1854 in Cincinnati, Ohio, painted landscapes and the figure in oil, watercolor and pastel. After exhibiting in the Armory Show in 1913, he died only three years later in 1916 in Meissen, Germany at the age of sixty-two. He studied at the Cincinnati Art Academy and the Munich Academy of Fine Art in Germany.

Muhrman exhibited at the Munich Academy of Fine Art in 1877, where he received a gold medal at the very young age of twenty-three. Other exhibitions include the National Academy of Design, New York City, in 1879-80 and 1897; Brooklyn Academy of Art, New York, 1879 and 1881; the annual exhibitions of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Philadelphia, in 1879-80, 1888 and 1894; Societe Nationale des Beaux Arts, Paris, France, in 1892, 1895 and 1899; and the Art Institute of Chicago, Illinois.

Henry Muhrman exhibited in several expositions and world's fairs, winning a number of medals. They include the World's Columbian Exposition, Chicago, Illinois, 1893, where he received a medal for his oil painting, "The Two Trees". He was working in London at the time. Also, the Munich Exposition, 1897 (gold medal); International Exposition, Dresden, Germany, 1901 (gold medal); St. Louis World's Fair, Illinois, 1904 (gold medal); and the Panama-Pacific Exposition, San Francisco, 1915 (medal).

A contemporary critic, University of California, Berkeley, Professor Eugen Neuhaus, mentions Henry Muhrman's paintings and pastels in his The Galleries of the Exposition. A Critical Review of the Paintings, Statuary, & Graphic Arts in the Palace of Fine Arts. In this book, Muhrman's painting in Gallery 72 of the 1915 Panama-Pacific Exposition, in San Francisco, is described as "One of the best landscapes (that) can be found here" Muhrman's six pastels in Gallery 119 are also praised, as is a second oil by the artist in Gallery 120.

Muhrman was a member of the International Society of Sculptors, Painters and Gravers; American Watercolor Society; Munich Secession; Berlin Secession; and London Pastel Society. He is listed in "Who Was Who in American Art".

His wash drawing, "Rigging Loft", appeared in the 'Century Magazine' article, "New York Attics and Housetops," in April 1881. It is currently in the Library of Congress Prints and Photographs Division, Washington, D.C.

Henry Muhrman's work is in the following American collections: Brooklyn Museum, New York; Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, Massachusetts; Cincinnati Museum; University of North Carolina, Greensboro; and the Rhode Island School of Design, Providence. He is also represented in Europe in the Tate Gallery, London; Munich Pinakothek; Belfast Art Gallery and Dublin Art Gallery, both in Ireland; three locations in Scotland, the Aberdeen Art Gallery, Glasgow Art Gallery and Kirkcaldy Museum and Art Gallery. Muhrman's paintings may also be found in South America in the Chilean National Art Gallery.
