This biography from the Archives of AskART:
A long-time resident of St. Augustine, Florida, Hildegarde Muller-Uri was a portrait and landscape painter in a variety of mediums as well as stained glass artist, etcher, illustrator, craftsperson and art educator.  She became particularly noted for her woodblock prints and linoleum cuts of city scenes and historic buildings.  Resulting was her book of twenty-two city scenes, St. Augustine in Woodcuts.

She was born in Greenwich Village, New York City.  She appears to have inherited some of the artistic talents of family members as her father, Henry Miller Uri was an amateur artist, and her uncle, Adolph Felix Muller-Uri, was a prominent portraitist in Switzerland and America.  Her parents were natives of the canton, Uri Switzerland.

The family moved to St. Augustine about 1898 when Henry Miller-Uri took a job as chef for a hotel run by Henry Morrison Flagler.  Henry later opened his own place, the Hotel Marion at 128 Bay Street.

Hildegarde began her art training in 1924, taking landscape painting from Heinrich Pfeiffer.  She also studied at the Art Students League with Frank Vincent Dumond, at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts with Hugh Breckenridge, and, between 1925 and 1930, with him at his school in East Gloucester, Massachusetts.  From Allen Lewis, she took woodcut printing, etching and illustration.  "According to some sources, she spent a significant portion of her youth in Europe, where she established herself as a painter before settling in St. Augustine in the early 1920s." (93) Between 1929 and 1931, she exhibited in New York City with the Society of Independent Artists.

In St. Augustine, she worked and lived in her parents' hotel and devoted much time as well to her art career.  In 1925, she founded the Galleon Art School and taught classes from there.  She became very active in the St. Augustine Arts Club, being one of the founders in 1931, teaching Club sponsored classes, and serving on committees and as President in 1947-1948.  Her parents were very supportive of the Arts Club, and when they sold their hotel in 1954, they loaned the Club money to build an Art Center.

Beginning 1937, she took up portrait painting in addition to landscape painting, studying with Wayman Adams for the next seven years.  In the 1930s and 40s, she traveled extensively in the United States and Europe, making eight trips overseas to visit museums and galleries.

Hildegarde Muller-Uri died in St. Augustine at age 99 and is buried in Evergreen Cemetery.
