Born in Omaha, NE March 24, 1895. Messenger earned an M.A. degree at Stanford University in 1921. He then taught romance languages at Stanford and the University of Texas until about 1925 when he settled in San Diego. In 1926 he held his first solo exhibition and later taught at San Diego State University and held classes in life drawing in Balboa Park's Fine Art Gallery. His most productive period was prior to 1945. Primarily a watercolorist, he was equally facile with pastels, charcoal, crayons, gouache, ink, gesso, and oil. Messenger is best known for his paintings of the desert and back country near San Diego. He died in San Diego on Sept. 6, 1983. Member: Laguna Beach AA;. Exh: Calif. WC Society, 1926-29; Calif. Born in Omaha, Nebraska, he was a landscape watercolorist who earned his M.A. Degree from Stanford University in 1921. He became a teacher of Romance Languages there and at the University of Texas.

In 1925, he settled in San Diego, holding exhibitions and later teaching at Balboa Park's Fine Art Gallery. In the 1920s and 30s, he painted watercolors in Mexico and South America. His most productive time was before 1945.
