| Born in the Netherlands on March 10, 1797. Moerenhout was educated in France and at 15 enlisted in the corps of engineers in Napoleon's army. After his military stint he studied art in Paris but elected to run a business firm in Antwerp while painting in his leisure. While following world commerce, his travels took him to South America and the South Seas. After marrying a Chilean girl, he established a home in Tahiti where he lived for 25 years. In 1846 he was appointed by the French govern (showing 500 of 847 characters). |
